Jamaican Bulla Cake

Usually eaten with cheese, pear (avocado) or butter, bulla is a favorite of Jamaicans worldwide. If you’re not in Jamaica and find it difficult to locate this pastry, I am here to tell you that you can make your own in less than an hour with basic ingredients found in most kitchens.

This is a simple recipe, you will need:

  • 5 cups flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 1/2 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • large bowl
  • rolling pin
  • baking tray
  • greaseproof paper
  • large spoon


In the large bowl, add flour along with all other dry ingredients and stir until ingredients are evenly distributed.

Mix sugar, water, and vanilla together.

Add melted butter along with sugar mixture to dry ingredients and stir just enough to combine ingredients.

Flour a flat surface and knead dough for 6 minutes.

Roll out dough to approximately 1/4 inch thickness.

Cut out individual bulla in whatever shape and size you desire.

Add greaseproof paper to the baking tray and place individual bulla dough on the tray.

Bake at 350F for 30 minutes. Enjoy!
